Wood Storage Skills

Hello everyone!  It’s been a long time but thought to check in.  Living in the mountains has kept me busy but this time of year it’s all about prep for winter (read: wood storage).  Last winter we burned through 3 cord in our wood stove but I knew I had a few improvements to make.

  • I was purchasing wood locally and having it delivered by the cord.
  • My wood storage consisted of stacks of wood covered in wind torn tarps, not exactly optimal.

This season has proven to be different.  I’ve gone out with some buddies to some private land and we felled dead trees, limbed and bucked them, hauled them down off the mountain to load to our trucks and trailers.  This made it easier for transport and I plan on splitting here at the house next to my (in progress) wood storage shelter.  The wood was essentially free, all we had to do was split and fill the owner’s wood barn first.

On to the storage shelter, which is about halfway built.  It will hold roughly 3.5 cord of wood and is free standing (4×4’s on block), 3 walls with canvas front and sloped roof.  Not only will it be more functional it won’t look like a yard sale on my property anymore.

All that said, I’ve gotta get out there and work on laying the floor.  Hope everyone is well, stay safe out there.
