Prepping is Practical…and Kind of Boring

Let’s keep it real here.  I don’t want SHTF to happen anytime soon, I’m referring to TEOTWAWKI type SHTF.  I like the comforts that modern life provides for myself and my family.  I like having a job, recreation time, friends, freedom to do many of the things which we find enjoyable.  I don’t fantasize about living like a pioneer or fighting off the golden horde.  I don’t hope for a “reset” or that our country collapses so that in some undefined time it can rise up from the ashes with preppers at the helm of some new government (hilarious).

All that stated I admit that we do live in seemingly perilous times, what with all of the financial and global instability going on.  Still I try to watch my lane and control what I can personally influence.  My preps and skills are centered around practical applications that will keep my family alive and well during a 4 day power outage or a 4 month disaster.  Here’s the issue with that, none of it is truly super sexy and quite honestly much of it is the grind, otherwise known as boring.

I wouldn’t categorize this blog as alarmist, although I do occasionally dedicate time to writing about events which concern me.  In 2012 I really thought we were circling the drain but the powers that be allowed it to continue, and so here we are.  Anyways, the practical side of prepping is pretty dry and the yawn factor is mid way on the charts.  Maybe it’s why prepping popularity has somewhat declined in recent years while the stock market continues to climb.  In any event I’ll keep my eye on the prize and strive for more self sufficiency while remaining in a connected / modern world.  If the time does come when we are cooking dehydrated food over a camp fire in my living room to survive I suppose we’ll just roll with the punches.  Until then don’t expect much flare from the blog, just more common sense and practical applications.

The blog can help keep us focused in addition to sharing tips and tricks.

The sharing aspect is great, everyone has a different approach to things.

    PJ,

The reason I keep hanging around is that you have a common sense approach to this subject. I avoid the “sky is falling” type forums, preferring a place that actually shares ideas and information instead of paranoia.

I’ll admit sometimes I do think the sky is about to fall when it comes to certain topics, but still try to frame it in a way where it’s reasonable. What I don’t get are those who follow sites which consistently post bad information / predictions…over and over and over.

Boring? OK, inventory in the pantry is no fun, but I have really enjoyed filling my safe with “heavy metals” and my BOL doubles as a playground for my kids. Well, the other way around. I’ve enjoyed gardening the “Back to Eden” method, and perhaps next year I will be able to brag about my honey bees and goats the way I spout off about my Yukon Golds and my Arucanas. I’m trying to be encouraging! I enjoy the research, the added knowledge, and the coming challenges- learning to weld! Solar cooking and hydro power! Pigs? Shortwave! More firepower and cartridges! A deeper larder to rotate, or not so much that one. God bless!
