Prep Updates: Random Ramblings

I’ve been pretty busy lately but hope to get a couple reviews up early this week.  I have a very nice piece of body armor which I have been very impressed with and a pretty cool multi-purpose camping light which has several variations on how you can utilize it.  Maybe I’ll get one up tomorrow evening as long as the chore list doesn’t run too long during the day (it is quite extensive).

In other news I hope everyone has been following along with updates from The Maj as he travels along on his bugout journey.  I’ve gotten quite a few text updates, some of which have been very intriguing, so I hope he includes some of those tidbits on his next update.  He usually sends me the pictures and I place them in the article where I believe appropriate, so if something doesn’t quite line up it’s my fault and not his.

I also wanted to point out the importance of testing out your equipment as I had a recent experience on the range.  Last month I installed some Trijicon night sights on one of my Glocks after picking up a nice sight pusher and front sight post tool.  I took the pistol to my local range (more like a field with a berm) and put a few hundred rounds through it while running some drills.  I got to the end of the session and had 3 more mags left to fire when my front sight turned 90 degrees on me.  I stopped shooting and quickly realized that the screw had come loose, a tiny screw by the way which would easily get lost if dropped in the grass.  I packed up and went home, applied MORE loctite onto the screw and re-tightened it.  This time it *should* hold, maybe I didn’t apply enough loctite the first time.

I guess the moral of the story is that you shouldn’t trust something fully until you test it out in the field.  Screws or bolts rattle loose, straps don’t always work correctly, pads slip and hot spots form after a few miles on the trail and the list goes on and on.  If you have something shiny and new just sitting on your prepper shelf in the basement I suggest taking it out and putting it through the paces.  Only then will you find out its true value.

Prep Deals Online:

The Maj has mentioned eating Datrex bars while on his bugout journey, pick up twelve 200 calorie bars over at Black River Outpost for $3.95.

Another item The Maj has been using, the Lifestraw Go bottle.  I hope he does a review on this as I’m anxious to see how it worked out (with all the river water).

Battle Over Internet Gun Sales Heats Up On Beacon Hill
PJ:  A quote from one of the state reps reference Armslist.com: “How many guns are being sold this way by private parties? “We don’t know, and that’s part of the problem,” he says.”

Wait, why do YOU (Mr Gov’t) need to know if I’m buying or selling a gun privately?  THAT is the problem.  I have literally met someone in a parking lot who I didn’t know, looked at a gun for 3 minutes, exchanged cash for said gun and walked away.  No names, no paperwork, no hassle..  You know what that is?  I’ll tell you what that is, that’s FREEDOM.

Another moral of the story is to have spare parts for critical pieces of equipment. I have two chain saws and lots of spare parts for each of them. Home heating in the winter is a critical issue for me so I tend to go overboard when it comes to supplying heat. Even so, I would not be surprised if the part that ultimately breaks or gets lost will be a part that I don’t have.
