DIY: Takedown Target Stands

Targets 1

My reasoning was simple:  I got tired of my cheap little target stands blowing over when the wind picked up over 5 mph.  Sure the landscaping stakes stapled together with foam board in the middle did work, but there had to be something better which was sturdier and easier to transport.  Obviously if you pay to go to an indoor (or outdoor) range near your home which already has target stands for use this will not apply. However if you are like me and have to BYOTS (Bring Your Own Target Stands) to your shooting venue this might be something that interests you!  I must stress that I did not come up with this concept but rather copied it from a range I visited once last year.  Here’s the lowdown.

  • Concept:  Sturdy target stands which break down easily for transport.
  • Time required: 1 hour, 2 if you are taking your time.
  • Money required: Around $20
  • Tools required:  Circular saw, BFH (Big Freakin Hammer), Drill, tape measure.
  • Materials: 2×4’s, Perforated decorative board (I call it peg board), Nails, Wood screws.
  • Misc Stuff:  Eye protection, radio, something to drink.

Step 1:  Gather materials from local hardware store and then lay most of the stuff out so that you can take a picture for the blog.

Step 2:  Create a sketch of what needs to be accomplished.  Be advised some of the measurements did change, but this was a 90% solution.

Step 3:  Measure based on the plan, and then start cutting stuff (make sure to wear eye protection).

Step 4:  Test fit everything.  Make sure to utilize a 2×4 as a spacer (which will hold the vertical target board) when nailing together the center boards on the base.  If you don’t do that, it might not work once completely assembled.

Step 5:  Nail base together, and then screw/nail the perforated board to the vertical 2×4.  My perforated board came in large sheets so I had to cut it down to 2ft x3ft sections.  The original plan called for a 6ft vertical piece, I changed that to 5ft.

Step 6:  Admire your work.  Call family members out to the garage to admire your work, they will be unimpressed.
