Why Buy Freeze Dried Food?

By AJ

Why should the average consumer choose to buy freeze dried foods?

1. Long Shelf Life – Freeze dried food has a much longer shelf life, making it ideal for emergency situations. These foods can be easily stored almost anywhere and at room temperature. Freezing or refrigeration is not necessary.

2. Easily Prepared – These foods can simply be rehydrated using water. Hot water typically reconstitutes the food in 8-10 minutes.

3. Conveniently Stored – After being freeze dried, only 2% of water remains in packaging, making these foods lightweight, portable, and compact. A two month supply of food for a family of five can be stored under a twin sized bed.

4. Nutritious – These foods do not have a processed taste. The freeze drying process basically freezes the natural colors, flavors, and textures of the foods for up to 25 years.

5. Gourmet Quality – We provide meals prepared by trained professionals with gourmet skills. Thus giving our foods a homemade taste that anyone can truly appreciate.

Freeze drying destroys certain phytonutrients. As a result the man who got the first freeze-drying patent did not use the technique! Proper dehydration preserves these nutrients so is far superior.

So would you recommend both Freeze Dried and Dehydrated food, or just Dehydrated?

One advantage of dehydrated is that you can do it yourself. Freeze dried is more likely used in “complete meals” or “prepared dishes”, rather than individual food items, so that might be considered. I personally do not have any freeze dried foods. Of course, having either one or both is far superior to having none at all! The practical solution is to get what you can, with a preference for the dehydrated when possible.
I also suggest a large assortment of organic seeds for sprouting – fresh is best of all.
By the way, if you are really well nourished and healthy, you can go for days without any food at all. If you get headaches or feeling like you are going to die with no food for a day or two, it means you are addicted and allergic to those foods you eat all the time and are going through withdrawal. After two or three days things feel much better. Grains and dairy are the most frequent culprits. Go on a fast (only water) for a few days and see how you fare. On a whim I can easily fast for two weeks and not even feel hungry. I am over 70 years old, too.

Thanks for the information, you are correct that dehydrated does allow for more flexibility for the DIY crowd. I wonder about the “going for days” without food statement, I mean anyone can go for days without food. I guess you are saying that if you are healthy you should be able to go for days without food and still feel vibrant/great/relatively unaffected? I also tend to wonder about the water fast?

Granted if one is relatively sedentary not eating for a few days or simply drinking water could be doable, although slightly uncomfortable. However, I know for a fact if I had to run 5 miles every day, plus go to the gym, plus hump a 50lb rucksack…for 3 days straight…my performance would be far and away better if I were allowed to eat. If I did not eat or only drank water, my performance would not only suffer it would be very dangerous for my health as my body would be starved for nutrients.

Thanks for you insight though, very thought provoking.

  1. Couldn’t agree more, freeze dried foods are space saving. The cost is a bit higher then most other alternatives, but when you factor in the weight, cost and storage of these packaged foods compared to other methods it does make a lot of sense. If you needed to pack up and move out real quick this would help you do it without being bogged down by a lot of extra weight.

Totally agree, while a large assortment of storage food can take up plenty of basement shelf space most of it is relatively light and can be moved quickly. Even the larger food buckets could be tossed into the back of a vehicle with BO gear very easily. Compared to traditional canned grocery store food Freeze Dried storage food is superior in just about every way, with the exception that preparation could take longer than “ready to eat” meals.

Thank you for this very good article. Could you recommend a company where I can purchase freezed dry food? There are many companies selling this food but I’m looking for a good company that has good prices as well. I love Mountain House and think they have delicious food and it’s so easy to prepare.
    Thanks…..

I think TJ sort of mentioned of the main tenets of the crossfit methodology (shameless plug for crossfit.com). In the Level 1 Cerrtification for crossfit there is a section on what they call the “wellness continuum”.

Imagine an analog fuel gauge in a car. On the left where empty would be is sickness. In the middle is wellness. And on the far right “full” side is fitness. This website has several articles about the importance of fitness when it comes to being prepared for any likely or unlikely scenario. And TJ is correct in his example. The closer you are to “fitness” the easier it is for you to deal with and overcome illness, injury, or the unknown and unknowable as crossfit calls it.

Ever notice how professional athletes have horrible knee injuries and are back to sprinting a couple months later? While they receive great medical care that we cant all duplicate, they can bounce back due to being physically fit to begin with. Think Lance Armstrong overcoming cancer (admittedly he had some outside help) to continue at being one of the greatest* in the world at what he did.

The same principles can assist the person that’s only physical need is lifting the heavy bag of dog food into the back of the truck. If you never develop your body to deal with even moderate amounts of physical exertion you will really feel it when you find yourself pushed into it. You dont want your first marathon to be motivated by a zombie horde!

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Good stuff man.

  2. You’ll find a wide assortment of types of freeze-dried food, in
fact, just about any type of food is available. Be careful when considering which food storawge company to purchase from, and make sure that they can back up their claims with
facts. Any type of currenncy collapse or default would be catastrophic, especially in urban areas,
but if you are prepared, then you’ll be able to handle your new circumstances well.
