Think you hit it right on the head with your assessment. I know speaking from personal experience, I’ve definitely has become more confident and worry less about the little things since I’ve started prepping a few years back. Kinda funny thinking back to the way my neighbors reacted this past year to a few power outages we’ve had because of storms, half of them were up and gone til the power returned couple days later. The other half sat and complained cause they couldn’t watch tv or had no way to make coffee or even cook food. Seemed like any other day around here, cept for the fact that we had to bust out the alky or propane stove to prepare our food.
A couple things that drive me nuts about about the prepper community are the following:
- Shows like “Doomsday Preppers”, holy crap… I realize they seek out people that are “out there” for ratings, but man nothing like making the whole movement look like a bunch of wackos. Gotten to the point where I quit watching it was getting so outrageous.
- Politics (this will probably get me in trouble with your readers lol), The community seems to lean pretty heavily to one side of the political scale and it kinda has a “my way or the highway” thing going on from reading various forums and sites around the internet. Personally I think politics will be that last thing on people’s minds if/when it all comes crumbling down. Folks will be more worried about the basics then who you voted for in the last election. Just my opinion.
I consider myself a democrat, but more of an old school dem than a liberal dem. I support the 2nd amendment, support fiscal and personal responsibility, I don’t want free stuff from the government, etc. Saying that, I do believe folks should be able to bargain collectively for wages as they have spent time and money acquiring skills to make themselves competitive in the workforce (this coming from my manufacturing background as a machinist). I don’t mind helping folks out when they are on hard times thru various programs as long as it isn’t a lifelong handout, I don’t consider money I’ve involuntarily contributed all my life to be an “entitlement”. I also don’t believe in tax hikes for middle class folks just to give billions to corporations that are making money hand over fist.
Having said all that, I enjoy your site and updates. I’ve learn a lot from many of your posts, sometimes I don’t agree with the politics, but that’s what makes this country great. We have the freedom to have different opinions and still be working towards the same goal in the end. Keep up the good work man.

I concur DDP doesn’t really paint our community in the best light. Not to mention, why anyone would volunteer to appear on television is simply beyond comprehension (even if they were offered money). I guess it’s all part of the “hey look at me” Facebook/Twitter society we live in these days.
I also agree with you assessment of the political landscape. I do not affix a label to myself (republican, democrat, libertarian) as I think many people who do that seem to live and die by whatever their chosen mainstream media outlet publishes. I also believe that most politicians have their best interest in mind versus that of the people, and that regardless of what letter is behind their name they all understand that they are all on the same team. It seems like you have a great common sense approach to things and I appreciate you sharing your opinions. Thanks for the comment and insight.

The problem I have are the people who are not preppring. Tryed to bring some in to the fold and they made fun of me. Then the next thing the say is if the sh$t hits the fun they are coming to my house. Witch makes me mad they know they should but dont. So now I need to help them. That will be the tuff part. The rest of what you said I like keep up the good work.

Jeremy,
That can present some issues, especially the “if T-SHTF I know I’m coming to your house” statement. Realize not everyone is open to the reality of our situation, they prefer to stay in their comfort zone. If they acknowledge that there is a need to prep, they also acknowledge that they are woefully unprepared. So…they continue on with their head in the sand.
