Concealed Carry > Knockout Game

I’m sure by now many of you have heard of the knockout game.  In this game, a group of wannabe thugs  take advantage of an unsuspecting victim and try to physically knock that person out with one punch.  This game has left several people injured and even killed others.

Fortunately there are ways to mitigate the risk of being KO’d by some of these mental midgets.

1- Situational Awareness

2- Don’t travel alone

3- Be prepared to protect yourself with a gun

4- Realize that bad things can happen to good people

What most of these thugs probably don’t realize is that they are rolling the dice when it comes to choosing “victims.”  Pick the wrong person to assault and you just might end up with some hot lead inside your body, as Marvell Weaver found out.

On February 26th a man waiting for his six-year-old daughter to to dropped off from school had no idea he would be the city’s first reported victim.

“I saw the van circle twice and the second time three came out. I didn’t suspect anything. I hadn’t any enemies, or any reason to believe they would be looking to do anything to me.”

We are not revealing the victim’s identity for his protection.

The victim was attacked by 17-year-old Marvell Weaver. But Weaver did more than try to knock his victim out, he tried to do it with a taser. Luckily for the victim, the taser didn’t work and he was able to protect himself with his concealed-carry .40 caliber pistol.

“He shoved something into my side. I wasn’t sure what it was. It had some force to it. I wasn’t sure if it was a knife or a gun,” said the victim.

Weaver was shot twice, in the leg and an inch away from his spine. He’s been sentenced to a year in jail for the attack, but he admits he’s getting off easy.

“It was just a lesson learned. I wish I hadn’t played the game at all,” said Weaver.

Looks like Marvell learned his lesson the hard way.  If he would have paid attention in school he would have known that if you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Great post PJ, on an important subject

I think that situational aweareness is definately the most important weapon in our arsenal: if you can recognize a bad situation coming, you can generally prevent or avoid it.

One thing I want to stress, which I am sure you know: A gun in a weapon, but not the ONLY weapon. One thing that was driven home to me in military police training is a simple fact of reaction time in regards to this. An unsuspecting person, being attacked by soimeone, has to generally be a MINIUMUM of 35 feet away before they can successfully draw, acquire and fire without running significant risk of injury themselves.

I am definitely for CCW and encourage it. I would highlight with this post that a handgun is only one weapon, and not always the ideal weapoin of choice in a bad situation. I woudl highly recommend some empty hand self defense techniques, as well.

If you can find it, there is a video called “Surviving Edged Weapons” that is very good at demonstrating this point. It opened my eyes to a lot of potential situations I never thought of before.
